The Humble Background Of Richard Liu

Richard Liu was brought up in the coastal region of Jiangsu, China, in a village known as Chang’an, where he lived together with his parents and grandparents. Liu’s parents were farmers by profession who struggled with poverty to provide for the entire family’s needs. Before Liu was born, his parents were wealthy ship owners, but due to the rise of Communism, they were forcibly resettled in Chang’an.

Unlike other regions, their village was not developing as it lacked electricity, running water, and paved roads. They experienced a shortage of nutritious food for four months, and they could only feed on corn. They would use the corn in making cornmeal porridge, dry cornbread, and corn pancakes. They would feed on sweet potatoes for the rest of the months, which they would either boil, make into pancakes, or just dry.

The JD.com CEO believed that only large cities would provide the platform he needed. Towards completion of his secondary school, he started applying to universities based in Shanghai and Beijing. The college exams saw him accepted into the Renmin University located in Beijing. The family could not raise the amount he needed for the trip as it was $75, which was excessively high. Thankfully, his neighbors and friends came to their aid and contributed to him as they had faith in him.

At the University, he studied Sociology as Qiangdong contemplated joining politics. During his free time, he worked at a small business center and there, he taught himself computer programming, which became fun for him and was his first entrepreneurial entry. With time, he used the funds he got as a result of his hardwork to purchase himself a computer and a cellphone, the two most expensive items by then, and he also built his parents a house back in the village.

Liu Qiangdong is considered as among the top entrepreneurs in the e-commerce industry. After launching his first online retail website sometime in 2004, he founded his JD.com only a year later.
